5 Recovery Tips After a Face and Neck Lift

A modern face and neck lift offers the most extensive, natural-looking, and enduring facial rejuvenation possible for men and women. Among the many signs of aging effectively addressed with a face and neck lift are sagging facial skin, jowls, loose neck skin and deep creases surrounding the nose and mouth. By lifting the deeper tissues of the face and neck, renewing support for the skin, a face and neck lift will provide a more youthful and energized appearance.

That said, the quality of the final results relies on the plastic surgeon’s expertise and the patient’s commitment and ability to follow their instructions during the recovery process. Renowned aesthetic plastic surgeon in La Jolla Scott Miller, MD has provided a brief list of need-to-know recovery tips after a facelift and neck lift:

  • The most important part of recovery in the first week or two is keeping the correct head and neck position. It is crucial for patients to keep their chin slightly elevated and to not move their head from side to side.
  • Patients must lay low the first week after surgery. Most patients feel good and may want to do things around the house or run a few errands. However, over activity can lead to delayed healing. Plenty of rest is crucial during the first few days after facelift surgery. Patients must sleep on their back with their head slightly elevated above chest level to reduce swelling.
  • Smoking and drinking alcohol during the recovery period is prohibited as they slow down the body’s natural healing process and negatively affect results.
  • A diet rich in proteins, antioxidants, and vitamins helps decrease swelling and inflammation. Dr. Miller will provide detailed aftercare information, but foods like fish, lean meats, fruits, veggies, eggs, cottage cheese, etc. are generally recommended. And Dr. Miller provides surgical vitamin supplements to take during recovery.
  • Makeup is not advised until approval from Dr. Miller or his team. Makeup products can introduce bacteria, dirt, and impurities into the incisions if they’re not fully healed, so it’s best to refrain from makeup application during the healing process and to replace cosmetics with new products once daily wear is resumed.
